In the year 1600, Jesuit Missionaries from Punnaikayal took a significant step towards spreading Christianity in the region. They established churches at Thirukazhoor and Srivaikundam, with the latter’s church being blessed on the 24th of July, 1600, by the Jesuit Provincial, Rev. Fr. Nicholas Pimenta. Initially, the church was small, yet it had an enduring legacy. The original structure was designed in the shape of the cross, with a large stone cross placed beside the altar. This distinctive feature earned the church the affectionate name “Cruz Koil,” translating to the “Church of the Cross.”
Notably, Srivaikundam Church was the first church in the interior region to be built in this cross-shaped design, setting a precedent for later ecclesiastical constructions
In 1644, Srivaikundam was established as a substation of Thirukazhoor, which was the central hub for missionary activities in the area at the time. However, the fate of the church took a turn in 1774, when the Jesuit Congregation was banned globally. During this challenging period, Srivaikundam was placed under the Diocese of Cochin, where it was cared for by Kathimars of the Syrian Rite, as well as priests from Goa.
With the eventual lifting of the ban on the Jesuits, the Madurai Mission was entrusted to the Jesuits of the Thulus Province in France, marking the return of active missionary work in the region.
One of the most revered figures in Srivaikundam’s history is Rev. Fr. Louise Durange, a passionate and dedicated missionary. He worked tirelessly in and around Srivaikundam, earning the love and respect of the local people. Fondly referred to as “Chinnasamy” or “Michaelnather” by the community, Rev. Fr. Durange made an indelible impact on the parish. His legacy remains alive, as he passed away in Srivaikundam and was laid to rest inside the church.
A significant milestone in the history of Srivaikundam Church occurred on 31st December 1938 when it was officially declared a separate parish. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in the life of the church, which was overseen by Rev. Fr. D. Gnanapragasam, the first parish priest of Srivaikundam.
Over the years, Srivaikundam Church has undergone various renovations and expansions to better serve the growing congregation. In 1989, during the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the parish, the church underwent a major renovation. Under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Cedric Peeris, a mandapam was added to the facade of the church, enhancing the church’s beauty and function.
Further development continued under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Viladmir Rayen, who oversaw the construction of the presbytery. This new structure was blessed by Bishop Ambrose Mathalaimuthu on 24th July 1977, solidifying the church’s place as an enduring symbol of faith and resilience in the community.
Today, under the pastoral leadership of Bishop Stephen Antony Pillai of the Thoothukudi Diocese, Srivaikundam Church continues to flourish. Bishop Pillai’s unwavering commitment to the growth of the church and his emphasis on nurturing spiritual life have been instrumental in strengthening the bonds within the parish community. His dedication to the legacy of Srivaikundam Church ensures that the sacred place remains a vital spiritual hub for the faithful, upholding its historic significance while embracing modernity.
Srivaikundam Church continues to be a beacon of spiritual devotion and historical significance. Through centuries of change and growth, it stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. With its rich history and the legacy of its dedicated priests and missionaries, including the ongoing support of Bishop Stephen Antony Pillai, the church remains a spiritual center for the people of Srivaikundam and beyond. The church’s commitment to preserving its history while embracing the future ensures that it will continue to be a place of worship, reflection, and community for generations to come.
